Crimson Storm Spirit Squad

Crimson Stix | Crimson Guard | ThunderCat | Cheerleaders | Crimson Crew

Ever since men’s varsity basketball was introduced to the SNU campus in 1964, the administration, faculty and especially students have loved to support their ever-growing Athletic Department. Fans of the Crimson Storm now number in the thousands as generation after generation of SNU students come to the university to learn and mature.

Organized cheering groups have long been a part of this tradition. Collectively, these groups make up the Crimson Storm Spirit Squad, which today consists of the Crimson Stix, Crimson Guard, ThunderCat, Cheerleaders, and the Crimson Crew. All of these groups together form a unified voice at SNU sporting events and routinely give opposing teams trouble as the Spirit of the Storm rolls on.

The Crimson Stix is a 10 member auditioned drumline that made its debut in the Fall of 2004. Consisting of men and women with talent in the field of percussion as well as a healthy dose of school pride, the Stix participate in the pre and post-game ceremonies during the football season.

They will then also provide the backbone of our 'pep band' for basketball season as well as playing at selected other athletic and community events. The Stix are poised to have an immediate impact on the atmosphere of SNU athletic events.

It’s a little hard to explain what the Crimson Guard IS. It’s a little easier to explain what the Crimson Guard is NOT. The Guard is not an ROTC military flag corp. You will not see twirling rifles or any form of organized marching. Nor are they a marching band flag corp. There are no batons or pink tu-tus in their immediate future. They are also NOT a male cheerleading group. They don’t do basket toss’ or other stunts.

The Crimson Guard IS a group of young men eager to show school spirit, capable of leading the masses and full of the desire to begin and continue the traditions associated with Crimson Storm athletics. From running a Crimson Storm flag across the field after touchdowns to leading cheers at basketball games these men are always on the positive side of cheering on the storm.

In its 2nd year as the SNU mascot, ThunderCat, has emerged as a wonderful example of school spirit. With a wide range of responsibilities that include leading the football team onto the field, half-time entertainment at basketball games, connecting with the ‘smaller’ Storm fans, and encouraging general crowd participation, ThunderCat continues to inspire a growing sense of pride in Crimson Storm Athletics. ThunderCat also makes public appearances at non-athletic events as well and is available by special arrangement for private booking.

View the SNU Cheerleaders Roster

The SNU cheerleaders have long been a staple at SNU sporting events. Since the inception of the athletic program cheerleaders have been patrolling the sidelines cheering on the Crimson and White. During various moments in their history they have been co-ed but are currently an all female squad. Whether leading chants at basketball games or doing stunts in front of the home crowd on the football field, the SNU cheerleaders continue to be the first line of spirit at our athletic events.

The student section at SNU sporting events has a long history of supporting the home team. Beginning with the Bleacher Bums in the late 60’s all the way through the Crimson Crazies of just a few years ago, the students of Southern Nazarene University have always voiced their support for their fellow classmates.

This new re-organization of the student section, begun in 2004, is an effort to be more inclusive of all students. In this group you will still find the face-painted fanatics as well as those who wish to show their support in a less colorful way. Whichever group you feel most like, there’s definitely a place for you here in the Crimson Crew.
