The Crimson Storm secured an automatic spot at nationals thanks to a 3-1 victory over SAC rival, Oklahoma City, on Friday night in the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament Championship game at Harmon Field in Bethany. SNU (16-3-1) will make the program’s fourth trip all-time to nationals.

    Box Score

On Friday night, it was a roller coaster evening for the Crimson Storm that ended on a high note. After both teams spent the first 20 minutes of the game feeling each other out, SNU would be the first team to get on the board at the 23:28 mark of the first half. Beatriz Silva played a nice cross into the box, finding Jackie Acevedo. Acevedo flew in and headed the ball into the goal to put SNU up 1-0.

Later in the half, Acevedo broke free in the corner and headed toward the goal, sending a ball across the face of the goal toward teammate Stephanie Royse. Royse took the pass and knocked the ball into the goal to increase the Storm lead to 2-0 with 33:52 on the clock.

SNU held the 2-0 lead heading into halftime.

With all the momentum on their side starting the second half, the Crimson Storm fans and players quickly had the air taken out six minutes into the half when SNU goalie, Erica Brown, went down with a possible ACL tear. Brown had come out to challenge a ball and went down in the pileup. After getting taped up, Brown would stay in for about four minutes and made one final save before being pulled from the game. Bruna Da Cas was sent into goal for the Storm.

After the swing of emotions, SNU responded quickly five minutes later, adding their final goal of the night. This time, Acevedo found Rachel Eguren downfield and with the keeper coming out to challenge, Eguren sent a left-footed shot past OCU goalie, Brittany Tibbs, to put the Storm up 3-0 with 56:06 on the clock.

SNU held onto their 3-0 lead until the final minute when OCU’s Josefine Holmgren scored on a free kick to cut the final SNU margin to 3-1.

In goal, Brown, whose status is unknown for NAIA National Tournament play, picked up the win, stopping six shots in 58:10 minutes of work. Da Cas picked up six saves in relief, giving up one goal in 31:50 minutes of work. OCU’s Tibbs collected six saves in 90 minutes of work, allowing three goals.

SNU’s Acevedo was named the SAC Tournament MVP. Acevedo scored two goals and had three assists in SNU’s two tourney wins.

The Crimson Storm will await the pairings for the NAIA National Tournament set to begin on November 21st.

All-time, SNU’s best finishes at nationals were in the 1995 and 1996 seasons when Southern Nazarene finished 3rd in both seasons at the NAIA National Championships.

SNU, the tournament’s #2 seed, improves to 15-3-1 on the year and will meet 4th-seeded Oklahoma City on Friday at home in the SAC Championship game at 7:00 p.m.

    Box Score

On Tuesday, SNU controlled the game against Rogers State, out-shooting the Hillcats 35-11, including launching eleven shots on goal to RSU’s five.

SNU scored early as Beatriz Silva played a nice through ball to a streaking Jackie Acevedo. Acevedo slid the ball past the keeper at the 5:06 mark of the first half to put SNU up 1-0. Silva was credited with the assist.

The Storm remained ahead 1-0 heading into halftime, out-shooting RSU 16-5 in the first period of play.

In the second half, SNU again struck early, this time Acevedo broke free on the left side of the goal and played a nice ball to Rachel Eguren. Eguren chipped the ball into the goal to give SNU a 2-0 advantage at the 51:47 mark of the second half.

The Storm continued to have much of the play for the remainder of the half and at the 84:30 mark, Megan Ritter launched a free kick down field that found the head of Bruna Da Cas. Da Cas knocked the header into the goal to give SNU a comfortable 3-0 advantage.

RSU’s lone goal of the game came late off a corner kick from Abby Rickner. Rickner’s corner bounded around in the box and Kendall Clement knocked in goal to cut the SNU lead to 3-1, but that proved to be as close as the Hillcats could get as SNU went on to win 3-1.

  • Women's Soccer - SAC Tournament Semifinal Preview

(BETHANY, Okla.)---Just like last night with the men’s soccer team, it’s now or never for the Crimson Storm women’s program this afternoon. SNU has had an outstanding year, claiming a share of the Sooner Athletic Conference Championship last Tuesday night with a 4-1 win over SAC rival Oklahoma City right here at Harmon Field.

Despite a stellar record of 14-3-1 and earning a share of the regular season crown in the SAC, the Storm still finds themselves lacking national respect. SNU has been outside the top 25 for numerous weeks, even in the midst of a nine-game winning streak. There is one poll left to come out later this afternoon, but regardless, SNU’s chances for nationals lies solely in their ability to win the SAC Tournament.

SNU is playing well heading into today’s semifinal match. The Storm hasn’t lost since September 29th.

Southern Nazarene’s opponent today is Rogers State. RSU is the tournament’s 6th seed and upset 3rd-seeded Oklahoma Baptist on Saturday in Shawnee, 1-0.

The Hillcats sport a 13-6 record heading into today’s match with the Storm.

These two teams met for the first time two weeks ago in Claremore with SNU winning 2-0.

In that match, Beatriz Silva scored SNU’s first goal at the 36:53 mark of the first half. Jackie Acevedo added some insurance later in the second half, scoring off a Rachel Eguren assist.

As a team, SNU out-shot the Hillcats 23-10, including launching 15 shots on goal to RSU’s five. In goal, SNU’s Erica Brown had five saves in the shutout win.

  • Storm blots out the Stars in 4-1 win over OCU

(BETHANY, Okla.)---Beating OCU is always a popular proposition among SNU students. So it is understandable that a significant representation of the student body turned out this evening on Senior Night to watch the Crimson Storm beat OCU in soccer and the Storm cheering section was not disappointed as the SNU faithful was treated to two wins over the Stars on Tuesday night. In women's action, SNU won a commanding 4-1 victory to improve to 14-3-1 on the year and 9-1 in SAC play.

    Box Score

The women’s soccer team contributed their half of the equation by defeating the visiting Stars 4-1 in an impressive display of both their ability as a team and their tenacity in a high-tension game. Their victory tonight won SNU a share in the regular season conference title. The Crimson Storm enter the playoffs with a #2 seed and a first round bye.

The Crimson Storm started the game strongly, forcing play to remain on OCU’s half of the field for the first 5 minutes of the game. Aggressive pressure on the ball provided a couple of good shots early, and kept the Stars from threatening the SNU goal, ably defended by senior Erica Brown as it was. With only 9 minutes of the game played, the OCU defense committed a foul in the box, giving SNU a penalty kick. Beatriz Silva took the shot, leaving the OCU keeper frozen in the middle of the goal as the ball buried itself in the lower left corner. Silva’s shot put the Storm up 1-0.

A bare 5 minutes later, on a free kick for the Stars, the ball slid through the defense and into the SNU goal to even the score at 1-1.

The game proceeded in a rather even fashion, with both teams threatening and defending with equal alacrity. With 15 minutes remaining in the first period, SNU’s Laura Pearson made a run up the middle of the OCU defense, executing a beautiful give and go to receive the ball in the open, only to be halted by an off sides call to the outrage of the loyal fans. This, unfortunately, was all to often the case as the first period began to come to a close. However, with 2:48 showing on the clock, Silva moved the ball up the field, drawing the OCU defense. As the blue-jerseys closed on her she poked the ball into the air with her toe. It’s arc took it over the heads of the Star defense and hit the streaking Jackie Acevedo who struck a passing shot to hit the right corner of the net. SNU moved up 2-1 and closed out the period without incident.

The second half saw a quick first 6 minutes before Acevedo found Randi Duncan down the left side. Duncan’s shot crossed the goal, and passed the diving keeper, to find the right corner. The score moved to 3-1 and the OCU team could be seen to visibly slump.

In the fashion of many soccer games, the rest of the second period passed in a blur of constant motion that, great effort notwithstanding, amounted to little. However, with 52 seconds remaining in the game, Rachel Eguren received the ball from Acevedo on the right side. Her shot glanced off the near post and the hands of the keeper before rolling into the back of the net. The clock expired on an SNU victory of 4-1.

The Crimson Storm were led on offense by Beatriz Silva, Jackie Acevedo, Randi Duncan, and Rachel Eguren, who shared the four SNU goals among them. Acevedo led with 2 assists. As always, Erica Brown anchored the SNU defense, tonight with 7 saves.

  • Women's Soccer vs. Oklahoma City Preview

(BETHANY, Okla.)---The Storm picked up their 8th win in a row on Friday at Rogers State, improving to 13-3-1 on the year and 8-1 in SAC play. In the process, SNU locked in at least a 2nd place finish in the Sooner Athletic Conference and the SAC tourney’s #2 seed. That’s good news because the top two seeds in the conference tournament have first round byes, so SNU is guaranteed to host at least the semifinal game of the SAC tournament that starts on Saturday.

Tonight though, SNU has a shot to play for a share of the Sooner Athletic Conference regular season title. If SNU can beat long-time rival, Oklahoma City, tonight, SNU will finish tied with John Brown at the top of the conference standings, thus sharing the regular season title. JBU defeated SNU earlier in the year, so the Golden Eagles are locked in as the SAC tournament’s #1 seed regardless of tonight’s outcome. JBU is also finished with regular season play.

An SNU loss would not hurt the Storm in terms of conference standing, as OCU cannot catch SNU. But, a loss would cost SNU the conference title.

The Stars enter tonight’s game with a 9-5-1 record and a 6-2-1 mark in SAC play. OCU sits in third in the SAC standings coming into tonight.

The SNU-OCU rivalry has been a great one over the years. OCU leads the series 22-14-1, but SNU has won three straight over the Stars. OCU had won eight straight games over SNU prior to the 2007 season.

  • SNU's Eguren and Brown earns SAC Player of the Week honors

(BETHANY, Okla.)---Southern Nazarene teammates Erica Brown and Rachel Eguren are Sooner Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Defensive and Offensive Players of the Week, respectively, for Oct. 26-Nov. 1.

Brown, a senior goalkeeper from Norman, had seven saves in shutout wins over St. Gregory’s and Rogers State.

Eguren, a junior forward from Houston, Texas, had four goals in theweek, getting all four in a win over SGU.

  • Women's Soccer wins 8th straight with 2-0 victory at RSU

(CLAREMORE, Okla.)--- The Crimson Storm women’s soccer team improved to 13-3-1 on the year and 8-1 in Sooner Athletic Conference play with their eighth-straight win, a 2-0 victory over Rogers State in Claremore on Friday night. SNU controlled the 90-minute game, finally putting the Hillcats away late in the second half with a second goal that sealed the deal.

    Box Score

After coming up short on several opportunities throughout the first half, with shots flying wide, high, and into the hands of the RSU goalkeeper, SNU finally found the back of the net with under ten minutes to play in the half.

The Storm’s first goal came after one of several blocked shots. Rachel Eguren fired at goal, but the shot was blocked and came out on the top right side of the 18 yard box where Beatriz Silva gained control, and blasted a low shot into the far right corner of the goal. Silva’s goal was unassisted and gave SNU a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

SNU continued to maintain their 1-0 throughout the second half, keeping the aggressive RSU forwards from taking any strong shots on goal with very strong defense, and maintaining possession when they had the opportunity. The Storm held the one-goal lead until late in the second half when Jackie Acevedo chipped the Hillcat goalkeeper at the 87:13 mark to put SNU ahead 2-0. Rachel Eguren picked up the assist on the goal, and SNU iced the game away with a strong defensive stand.

In goal, SNU’s Erica Brown picked up the shutout victory. Brown had five saves in 90 minutes of work.

SNU closes out regular season play against Oklahoma City on Tuesday night at 5:00 p.m. The game will be held at Harmon Field, and the SNU seniors when be honored between games.

  • Women's soccer picks up 7th straight win, downs SGU 7-0

(BETHANY, Okla.)---The Crimson Storm women’s soccer team improved to 12-3-1 on the season and 7-1 in SAC play with a huge victory over St. Gregory’s on Tuesday evening at Harmon Field. SNU got off to an early start, putting the ball in the back of the net twice before the 15-minute mark of the half, but the Cavaliers kept the Storm out of the goal for the remainder of the half.

    Box Score

SNU’s first goal came at the 10:14 mark of the half when Bruna Da Cas chipped a ball over SGU’s back line. Jackie Acevedo ran on, and placed the ball past the Cavaliers keeper to give the Storm a 1-0 lead.

Da Cas teamed up with Rachel Eguren just over a minute later to give SNU a two-goal lead. After receiving a pass from Randi Duncan, Da Cas turned towards the center of the field and played a ball across the face of the goal to Eguren who fired a beautiful left footed shot into the back of the net.

The Storm maintained control for the remainder of the half, keeping possession of the ball for the majority of the time and forcing SGU goalkeeper, Jennifer Taber, to make several saves. SNU took 15 shots in the half, but Taber picked up seven saves to keep the Storm lead narrow after 45 minutes of play.

In the second half, SNU continued to control the game, moving the ball around the field with ease and tacking on five more goals to slowly increase their lead throughout the half. Eguren and Acevedo teamed three times in the half to give the Storm a 5-0 lead with over 20 minutes still remaining in the game. Acevedo took on several defenders all three times before passing the ball off the Eguren who simply placed the ball into the back of the net. Acevedo’s three assists, and Eguren’s three goals came at the 50:35 mark, 62:39 mark, and the 62:03 mark of the half.

With a large lead already in their fair, and momentum resting on the shoulders of every SNU player, the Storm tacked on two more goals to go ahead 7-0. Stephanie Royse gave SNU their sixth goal of the night at the 73:59 mark of the game, and Kira Sparks added a goal ten minutes later. Da Cas picked up her third assist of the game, playing a ball to Sparks on the perimeter of the 18 yard box. Sparks took a touch, and fired a shot towards goal, scoring off the crossbar to give the Storm their final goal of the game.

For the game, SNU was led by Eguren’s four-goal performance, and Acevedo and Da Cas’ three assists a piece. Storm goalkeeper, Erica Brown, picked up the shut out win. Brown finished with two saves.
  • Women's Soccer vs. St. Gregory's Preview

(BETHANY, Okla.)---SNU keeps on rolling as the regular season comes to a quick conclusion. The Crimson Storm won their sixth straight game on Saturday night here at Harmon Field, cruising past Mid-America Christian 4-1 to improve to 11-3-1 and 6-1 in SAC play.

The new rankings will come out later this afternoon, so Storm fans will have to wait and see if SNU will finally get some national attention. The Storm has been earning votes in the polls for several weeks, but hasn’t been able to crack the top 25.

In the Sooner Athletic Conference regular season race, SNU is in good shape, sitting a half game back of John Brown. SNU is 6-1 in SAC play while the Golden Eagles are 7-1 in conference play. SNU’s lone SAC loss was against John Brown earlier in the year, 3-2, here at Harmon Field.

SNU will need help to win the SAC outright. The Golden Eagles have two very winnable games left in conference play, both at home against Oklahoma Christian (2-4-1) and Northwestern Oklahoma (1-6).

SNU’s road is tougher with a trip to Rogers State (4-3) looming on Friday and their regular season finale with the Storm’s biggest SAC rival, Oklahoma City, at home next Tuesday night. OCU is 5-1-1 in SAC play.

If SNU wins out, they will share the SAC title with JBU. But, three SNU wins and a Golden Eagle slip up would give SNU the title outright. In terms of the SAC tournament, a tie would result in SNU being the tournament’s #2 seed.

SNU meets St. Gregory’s tonight. The Lady Cavs are 4-10-1 on the year and 1-6 in SAC play. SNU leads this series all-time 12-8-1.

  • Women's Soccer controls game against Mid-America Christian

(BETHANY, Okla.)---The Southern Nazarene University Women’s Soccer team kicked off against Mid-America Christian University today here at the SNU soccer fields. Strong play all around allowed the Crimson Storm to dominate throughout the afternoon. SNU gained their 11th win of the season, and 6th of conference play in a 4-1 victory.

    Box Score

The Crimson Storm dominated the game from the first, not allowing MACU a shot until 18:54 of the first period had passed. Ten minutes later, SNU scored their first goal of the evening as Alecia Peterson put the ball in the back of the net. It was her first goal of the season.

Scarcely a minute had passed before Jackie Acevedo, on a pass from Beatriz Silva scored the Storm’s second goal, making it 2-0. The remainder of the period passed in a reasonably tame fashion, despite a remarkable number of fouls committed by the MACU squad, eight total in the first half, with one resulting in a yellow card.

The second period started off slowly, with SNU not allowing only two MACU shots in the first half hour of play, compared to the Storm’s seven. 31 minutes into the second period, SNU’s Rachel Eguren corralled a rebound from a MACU save and put the ball in the net to put SNU up 3-0. Only four minutes later, Kendra Nixon joined Peterson by scoring her first goal of the season and putting the Storm up 4-0.

SNU controlled the rest of play until the last seconds of the game, which contained a free kick near the SNU goal for MACU. The referee is required to blow his whistle before the kicking team is allowed to kick the ball. As the clock wound down below ten seconds, the referee had not blown his whistle as he was enforcing a distance rule on SNU defenders. The MACU kicker did not wait for him, however, striking the ball and sending it into the net to the surprise of the SNU defense, who had been expecting the required whistle. Frustrating as it may be, the clock expired shortly thereafter and the game ended with SNU winning 4-1.

The SNU defense was led, as usual by Erica Brown, who had 3 saves. On offense, as explained above, Peterson, Acevedo, Eguren, and Nixon combined for the Storm’s 4 goals.
  • Women's Soccer vs. Mid-America Christian Preview

(BETHANY, Okla.)---The Crimson Storm is cruising as we head into the final few weeks of regular season play. SNU is riding a five-game win streak heading into tonight’s conference match-up with Mid-America Christian.

SNU is now 10-3-1 on the year and 5-1 in SAC play, sitting in second place, a half game back of first place John Brown in the conference standings. JBU handed SNU their lone conference loss back on September 29th here at Harmon Field, 3-2.

So, SNU will need some help to claim the conference championship, but the Golden Eagles have their toughest game of the year remaining today at USAO. USAO is in third, a half game back of SNU. The Drovers are the SAC’s lone ranked team, coming in at #22 in the latest SAC poll. SNU defeated the Drovers 3-2 in Chickasha on October 6th.

Despite the lack of national recognition, SNU is still going to be a major contender down the stretch for the conference title and a possible bid to the NAIA National Tournament. But, the key will be winning. SNU has to keep collecting victories to give themselves a shot at both the SAC and nationals.

Three of SNU’s four remaining games are at home beginning with tonight’s game against the Lady Evangels. SNU won the lone meeting between the two schools last year, 7-0. MACU is 5-6-1 and 1-3-1 in SAC play.

SNU is featuring the reigning SAC Defender of the Week tonight, Erica Brown, and the reigning SAC Offensive Player of the Week, Jackie Acevedo.

  • Women's Soccer moves into tie for first in SAC with 2-0 win at OC

(OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla.)---The Crimson Storm women's soccer team moved into a first place tie with John Brown in the Sooner Athletic Conference standings with a 2-0 victory over SAC rival, Oklahoma Christian, on Tuesday night in Oklahoma City. SNU improves to 10-3-1 on the year with the win and 5-1 in SAC play.

    Box Score

John Brown handed SNU their lone conference loss earlier this season. SNU is riding a five-game win streak with tonight's win with their last loss being the loss to John Brown on September 29th at Harmon Field. SNU's two goals came from Rachel Eguren and the reigning SAC Offensive Player of the Week Jackie Acevedo. The reigning SAC Defender of the Week, SNU goalie Erica Brown, picked up the shutout win.

The Storm had the wind at their backs to start the game, but the Eagles came out controlling possession in the first few minutes. After settling into their game, SNU began to gain control and took a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute of the game.

Beatriz Silva received a ball in the middle of the field and turned to face OC’s goal, playing a perfect through ball to Jackie Acevedo who beat an Eagle defender in a foot race to the ball. Acevedo dribbled towards the right goal post, drawing the goalkeeper, Allie Cofer, away from the goal and touching the ball around as she slid it to grab the ball. Acevedo fired a shot to the far post and SNU controlled a 1-0 lead.

The Eagles attempted to pressure in the remaining minutes of the first half, but SNU had a very strong defensive night and few shots were taken on goal. The Storm continued to look for another goal, but couldn’t find one until after the halftime break.

Once the second half began, SNU wasted no time adding a cushion to their one goal lead. Less than a minute into the second half, Stephanie Royse played a through ball to Rachel Eguren, who mirrored Acevedo’s first half goal to give the Storm a 2-0 lead at the 45:47 mark of the game.

OC attempted to use the wind to their advantage following the Storm goal, but they were unable to put the ball in the back of the net. With just over two minutes to play in the game, the Eagles saw their best shot of the game soar over the goal as Erica Brown came up with a big save to preserve the Storm shut out. Brown finished the game with six saves.

SNU picked up the 2-0 shut out victory, which kept their five-game winning streak, and three-game shut out streak alive.

The Storm will be in action again on Saturday evening at 5:00 p.m. when they host Mid-America Christian University at Harmon Field.

  • SNU's Brown and Acevedo earn SAC Player of the Week honors

(BETHANY, Okla.)---Southern Nazarene University teammates Jackie Acevedo and Erica Brown are Sooner Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, for Oct. 12-18.

Brown, a senior goalkeeper from Norman, Okla., had 11 saves in shutout wins over Wayland Baptist and Northwestern Oklahoma State. Seven of those saves came against the Pioneers.

Acevedo had four goals and one assist in those two matches, including a hat trick and an assist in the Wayland Baptist contest.

  • Women's Soccer picks up second straight shutout win at Northwestern

(ALVA, Okla.)---The Crimson Storm women’s soccer team improved to 9-3-1 and 4-1 in Sooner Athletic Conference play with a commanding 7-0 victory over Northwestern Oklahoma State University on Saturday afternoon in Alva.

    Box Score

SNU controlled the game from the outset and scored quickly as Rachel Eguren got the Storm off to a quick start with a goal two and a half minutes into the game. Eguren won a ball from a defender on the far right side of the 18 yard box and turned and fired far post into the top corner of the goal to put SNU up 1-0.

Jackie Acevedo made it 2-0 SNU, scoring at the 7:40 mark. Acevedo brought down a ball out of the air from Amanda Peterson. After gaining control and turning towards goal, Acevedo took on a lone defender and beat her, blasting a low shot past the NWOSU goalkeeper to widen the gap for the Storm.

SNU’s third goal was at the 16:47 mark as Beatriz Silva got into the act. Acevedo started the scoring run by beating a defender on the left side and crossing the ball to Eguren who then passed it back towards the center to Silva. Silva ripped the ball low into the corner to put SNU up 3-0.

Megan Ritter followed with SNU’s fourth goal at 32:16 mark. Silva switched the field and Ritter took a touch before firing a beautiful shot for about 30 yards out to increase SNU’s lead to 4-0 with over ten minutes still remaining in the half.

With time ticking away in the first 45 minutes of play, the Storm tacked on a fifth goal to secure a large lead going into the break. Amanda Peterson gave SNU’s defense their second goal of the day following Ritter’s beauty. After Acevedo went down in the center of the field, Peterson lined up to take the Storm free kick from 25 yards out. She drilled a perfect free kick upper 90 to make the score, SNU 5, Northwestern 0, at the half.

The second half was much quieter offensively for the Storm, and the Rangers attempted to put the ball in the back of the net as they threatened the SNU defense several times. But the Storm defense held strong and preserved the shut out, while the offense added two more goals in the final ten minutes of the game to give SNU the 7-0 victory.

Stephanie Royse put SNU up 6-0 at the 81 minute mark, taking a deflection off a shot from Acevedo and sending it past the keeper. Acevedo had nearly scored after taking a through ball from Silva, but the shot was blocked to Royse who finished the play.

The Storm’s final goal came with just over six minutes to play in the game when Silva scored her second goal of the game to give her team the big 7-0 win in Alva.

In goal, Erica Brown picked up four saves in the shutout victory.

SNU will be in action again on Tuesday evening when they travel to Oklahoma Christian for another conference match that is set to begin at 5:00 p.m.

  • SNU shuts out Wayland Baptist

(Bethany, Okla.)---The Sothern Nazarene University women’s soccer team kicked off against the Wayland Baptist Pioneers today here in fog-bound Bethany. The Crimson Storm came looking for their third conference win of the season, and found it, moving to 3-1 in conference play. SNU defeated WBU in a 6-0 shutout.

    Box Score

As seems to be the usual pattern, the Crimson Storm got off to a bit of a slow start, allowing the Pioneers to move the ball as they wished, and spending plenty of time on the defensive end of the field. However, about 15 minutes into the first half, SNU seemed to wake up. Several shots by Jackie Acevedo, Beatriz Silva, Bruna Da Cas, and Stephanie Royse followed each other in quick succession, keeping WBU on their heels.

The Pioneers could hold off the attacking Storm only so long, however. 26:27 flashed across the clock as Acevedo streaked down the left side drawing the defense, only to pass it towards the middle where Silva deftly put the ball into the lower right corner of the net. SNU went up 1-0.

Play continued, with Rachel Eguren and the Storm offense maintaining the pressure on the WBU defenders. The Pioneer keeper, Shelby Ohler was forced to save several shots that the Storm sent rocketing her way. One such shot came as SNU’s Alecia Peterson drove down the left side, crossing the ball to the middle to the waiting Da Cas, who ripped a shot straight towards the middle of the goal. Only a diving effort kept the ball from going in, but the WBU keeper was unable to keep control of the ball after her save. It rebounded back towards Da Cas, who calmly put it through to put the Storm up 2-0, a lead that stayed throughout the remaining 2 minutes of the first half.

The start of the second period found the Crimson Storm continuing to assert their dominance over the Pioneers. Shot after shot was sent towards the WBU goal. The Pioneers managed to mound a few attacks of their own, all of which, throughout the entire game in fact, amounted to nothing as the SNU defense, led by keeper Erica Brown, corralled or forced wide every attempt. The clock read 26:31 as Acevedo, assisted by Eguren, buried a ball in the back of the WBU net, putting the Storm up another goal: 3-0. Not too much later, Acevedo again found herself with the ball and only the WBU goalie in front of her. Her shot slid past the Pioneer keeper to move the score to 4-0. This feat was repeated a bare four minutes later, this time with an assist from Eguren. SNU went up 5-0.

The Storm continued to dominate play, and with 9 minutes remaining in the game, SNU’s Kira Sparks ran into a milling mass of players in front of the WBU goal and put the ball away to gain the final score: 6-0.

SNU offensive dominance can be seen in a comparison of shot stats. WBU shot the ball 14 times throughout the game; SNU more than doubled that number, firing 31 shots.

Keeper Erica Brown, who had 7 saves on the day, led the Storm’s shutout defense. Offensively, Jackie Acevedo led with 3 goals, joined by Bruna Da Cas, Beatriz Silva, and Kira Sparks, who had 1 goal each.

  • Women's Soccer vs. Wayland Baptist preview

(BETHANY, Okla.)---Southern Nazarene is still right in the thick of things in the Sooner Athletic Conference race, but consistency will be the key if SNU wants a shot at the regular season SAC crown.

The Crimson Storm enter today’s SAC game with Wayland Baptist with a 7-3-1 record and a 2-1 mark in the SAC.

The Storm sit in a five-way tie for 3rd place with Oklahoma Christian, USAO, OBU and OCU. Rogers State and John Brown are ahead of the Storm with a 3-1 record, but no one is running away with the conference title as of yet.

The next few stretch of games are winnable for SNU as four of SNU’s next five games are against SAC teams with a combined record of 1-10 in conference play. The lone exception will be next Tuesday when SNU plays at 2-1 Oklahoma Christian.

Today’s opponent, Wayland Baptist, is 3-8 on the year and 1-3 in SAC play. Wayland’s lone conference victory was a 3-0 shutout of Northwestern Oklahoma State this past weekend.

All-time, Southern Nazarene and Wayland Baptist have met six times with SNU winning all six meetings. Last year, Southern Nazarene defeated the Pioneers twice. The first was in Plainview in a game that went to overtime before SNU won 1-0. Later in the year, SNU downed Wayland in the first round of the SAC tournament, 3-0, here at Harmon Field.

  • Women's Soccer mounts comeback; downs USAO 3-2

(CHICKASHA, Okla.)---The Crimson Storm women’s soccer team erased a 2-0 deficit to knock off the University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma (USAO) on Tuesday afternoon in Chickasha, 3-2. The win improves SNU to 7-3-1 on the year and 2-1 in Sooner Athletic Conference play.

    Box Score

Tuesday’s game was a battle of one nationally ranked team, with USAO coming in at 21st in the latest poll, and another team that is receiving votes, SNU. USAO was also ahead of SNU in the SAC standings, coming into the game ranked number one in the conference with a 2-0 record. With the Storm’s win on Tuesday, it evens SNU with the Drovers in third place behind unbeaten Rogers State and John Brown who are both 2-0.

On Tuesday, USAO grabbed the momentum right off the bat by scoring the games first two goals early in the first period of play.

SNU finally got on the board about ten minutes after USAO’s second goal as senior Randi Duncan drilled a left-footed shot from 18-yards out into the top, near corner of the goal to cut the USAO lead to 2-1.

As time ticked away in the first half, SNU tied the game when Alanna Mena took a Beatriz Silva cross and sent the ball past the Drover keeper into the lower left-corner of the goal, knotting the game at 2-2. The game remained tied at 2-2 heading into halftime.

SNU completed the comeback in the second half, scoring the half’s lone goal. Jackie Acevedo started the SNU scoring run by playing a ball out to Stephanie Royse, who then fed it back to Acevedo towards the end line. Acevedo crossed the ball to the far post and found Bruna Da Cas streaking towards the goal. Da Cas took the Acevedo pass and sent the ball into the far corner to put SNU up for the first time, 3-2.

Later in the half, SNU goalie, Erica Brown, preserved the Storm win by stopping a bullet from USAO’s Calli Cooper. Cooper’s shot was headed to the top right corner of the goal when Brown elevated and punched the shot out, keeping SNU up one goal. SNU held on for the win, 3-2.
  • Women's Soccer blanks OBU for first SAC win

(SHAWNEE, Okla.)---After suffering a disappointing loss to John Brown on Tuesday night in their Sooner Athletic Conference opener, the Crimson Storm women's soccer team rebounded with an impressive 2-0 shutout of previous SAC unbeaten, Oklahoma Baptist, on Friday afternoon in Shawnee.  The win moves SNU to 6-3-1 and 1-1 in conference play.

    Box Score

Friday's game was a defensive struggle as both teams remained scoreless for much of the game until SNU finally opened up the flood gates late in the second half.  SNU held much of the possession in half two, and finally made the Lady Bison pay at the 81:52 mark of the game when Bruna Da Cas crossed a ball into the box.  Da Cas' cross was deflected off an OBU defender's head and sailed into the goal to put SNU up 1-0.  Da Cas was credited with the goal, which was her fourth of the year.

After finally breaking through, SNU wasted little time in adding another goal.  This time, SNU's leading scorer, Jackie Acevedo, broke free and played a ball to Rachel Eguren in front of the goal.  After a few quick touches, Eguren rocketed a low shot to the far post, past the Lady Bison goalie to put SNU up 2-0 with 87:53 to play in the game.  The goal was Eguren's fourth of the year and the assist was Acevedo's fifth of the season.

The Storm's second goal was all reigning SAC Defender of the Week, Erica Brown, needed as Brown and the SNU defense held the Lady Bison scoreless for the final few minutes to secure the 2-0 Storm win.

In goal, Brown finished with six saves.

SNU will be in action again on Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. in Chickasha, Oklahoma when they face USAO.

  • SNU falls 2-3 in disapointing loss to John Brown

(BETHANY, Okla)---The Southern Nazarene University women’s soccer team welcomed the John Brown University Golden Eagles to Bethany today. The Crimson Storm walked on to the field with a record of 5-2-1, and left it at 5-3-1 as they lost 2-3 in a disappointing match.

    Box Score

SNU fell into what seems to have become something of a pattern: they allowed their opponents to control play at the beginning of the game. This evening, however, that control did not last for long. After four minutes of barely managing to get the ball across the midfield line to play offense, the Storm began to impose themselves upon the Golden Eagles. A strong run down the left side by Jackie Acevedo in the 7th minute set off a period of SNU offensive attack. After 8 minutes of the game had passed, Beatriz Silva played an excellent ball up the middle to Rachel Eguren, who ripped a left-footed shot that was snagged by the John Brown keeper Faith Thurman. She would not be so successful the next time.

A bare two minutes later, another exquisite pass from Silva went out left to the attacking Acevedo who, after a breakdown in the Golden Eagle defense, found herself alone with the keeper. Her shot angled past Thurman and rolled across the line into the net to put the Storm up 1-0.

The Storm continued to play well for 20 minutes further, with several John Brown attacks failing to find their mark. However, as the clock read 14:30, a goal by the Golden Eagle’s Sarah Kidd evened the score, 1-1. Not even two minutes had passed before a foul in the box on the John Brown end of the field led to a penalty kick, which Silva buried in the lower-left corner. SNU was now up 2-1.

Rather even play rounded out the remainder of the first period, with Erica Brown putting in an excellent performance at keeper with several saves. The first period ended with SNU leading by 1.

The start of the second period began with a good ten minutes of SNU offensive dominance. With shots by Stephanie Royse, Eguren, and Silva missing high. The momentum of the game, however, was quick to change, as a suddenly aggressive John Brown offense evened the score at 2 on a goal from Kidd.

The subsequent 20 minutes of play were characterized by both teams threatening offensively, ranging back and forth across the field. This game, however, was not going to end in a tie, on a frustratingly good cross from Camille Malkiewicz, JBU’s Kathryn Rehner sent the ball into the left corner of the goal, sneaking it over Brown’s diving defense. SNU fell behind 2-3 with 14 minutes left to play. Desperate play from the Crimson Storm over the rest of those minutes proved not enough to catch up with the Golden Eagles, who dictated both the rate and location of play for the rest of the game. SNU lost for the third time this season, with the score at 2-3.

Defensively, Brown snagged 6 saves on the night, allowing 3 goals, and on the offensive side of the ball, Silva had 3 shots, 1 goal, and 1 assist. Acevedo, who was responsible for SNU’s other goal, accompanied her in offensive leadership.
  • Women's Soccer vs. John Brown Preview

(BETHANY, Okla.)---The Crimson Storm picked up two non-conference victories last week in their first two games at home this year, fighting off two pesky teams who have been receiving votes in the NAIA national rankings (Kansas Wesleyan and Ottawa). Now, SNU sets its sights on the Sooner Athletic Conference as all games that remain will be SAC contests.

SNU is off to a 5-2-1 record on the year, but the real season lay ahead for the Storm. Tonight, the SAC season gets underway as SNU hosts John Brown.
JBU won the conference two years ago, and last year finished behind SNU with a 8-1-1 record in conference play.

John Brown has owned the series with the Crimson Storm, holding a 6-2-1 advantage all-time. In their last five meetings, JBU leads the series 3-1-1, but SNU picked up a memorable victory over the Golden Eagles in 2007, downing JBU in double overtime, 1-0, in the NAIA Region VI Tournament. Last year, SNU and JBU tied, both going scorless after two overtimes in Siloam Springs.

The Crimson Storm received some good news yesterday, as SNU’s Jackie Acevedo was named SAC Offensive Player of the Week and Erica Brown was the SAC Defender of the Week.

This will be an important week for SNU. Tonight it’s John Brown, and then on Friday, SNU hits the road for a SAC tangle with Oklahoma Baptist.

  • SNU's Jackie Acevedo and Erica Brown sweep SAC weekly honors

(BETHANY, Okla.)---Southern Nazarene University teammates Jackie Acevedo and Erica Brown are Sooner Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Players of the Week for Sept. 21-27.

Acevedo, a junior forward from Austin, Texas, scored two goals and added an assist to lead the Crimson Storm past Kansas Wesleyan and Ottawa, both of whom received votes in the NAIA Coach’s Top 25 poll.

Brown, a senior goalkeeper from Norman, Okla., had shutouts in both of those matches, recording eight saves for the week.

  • Storm triumph 3-1 over Ottawa University

(BETHANY, Okla.)---The Southern Nazarene University women’s soccer team welcomed the Ottawa University Braves to Bethany this evening as they sought their fifth win of the season in their second home game of the year. If ye seek, ye shall find: the Crimson Storm triumphed over the Braves from Kansas in a 3-1 victory.

    Box Score

Ottawa had opportunities early with two corner kicks from the left corner in the first three minutes of play. On the second, a point-blank header was snagged by keeper Erica Brown for her first save of the game.

Ottawa controlled the ball throughout the first half, with the SNU women struggling to move play across the half-field line. As the clock read 38:55, an Ottawa forward ripped a shot from the middle of the field, only for it to find it’s unerring way into Brown’s gloves.

The Braves continued to control the game, with multiple notable breakaways down the field by Jackie Acevedo, Bruna Da Cas, Rachel Eguren, and Beatriz Silva. These breakaways amounted to almost the entirety of SNU offense in the first period. None of them amounted to a score.

The clock read 17:20 when the SNU defense committed a foul in the box, leading to a penalty kick at almost point blank range. Ottawa University went up 1-0 as a ball from Amanda Just found the back of the net.

The highpoint of the first period for the Crimson Storm came with 23 seconds remaining, when a shot was rifled out of the middle towards the SNU goal, causing Brown to leap into the air, extending to the fullest extent of her 5’6” frame to punch the ball up over the cross-bar.

The first period ended with the Crimson Storm down 0-1 after a poor offensive showing. “We were very disorganized,” Brown said after the game. In the last 20 minutes of the half alone, SNU only challenged their Ottawa opponents on 3 of 25 air-balls.

As disappointing as the first period was for the Storm, the second half more than made up for it. The SNU squad came roaring out of the gate, with Acevedo receiving a brilliant cross from Silva with only 1:49 seconds having passed in the second period. Perfectly positioned, the goal wide open, Acevedo buried the ball in the back of the net. The game was tied 1-1.

The Crimson Storm continued their improved play throughout the second half and with 32:30 on the clock Silva again found Acevedo streaking down the left side past the defenders, leaving her alone with the Ottawa keeper. Finding the perfect angle, her shot found the opposite back corner to put SNU up 2-1.

A bare 2 minutes later, Da Cas and Acevedo made another good run down the left side, pulling a sort of give-and-go as Da Cas passed to Acevedo, who passed back to a sprinting Da Cas. Shouts of “Bruna!” erupted from the SNU stands as her shot put the Storm up 3-1, the final score of the game.

The remaining half hour of play was largely controlled by SNU, with strong shots on goal from Silva and Eguren, the first barely saved, and the second slamming off of the left post.

For the game, SNU posted 13 shots to Ottawa's eleven.  In goal, SNU's Brown collected five saves with one goal allowed, while Ottawa's Lauren Piel had four saves with three goals allowed.

  • Women's Soccer vs. Ottawa Preview

After a long stretch of away games to start the year, SNU finally played at home on Tuesday night and treated the home Storm fans to a solid 1-0 win over Kansas Wesleyan.

Tonight, game two of SNU’s three-game home stand will get underway as the Crimson Storm host Ottawa University from Kansas. SNU enters tonight’s game with a 4-2-1 record and have won four-of-five games.

This year, SNU has had a well balanced offensive attack, led by 2008 All-American Rachel Eguren. Eguren has three goals, which is tied atop the SNU scoring list with newcomer Jackie Acevedo. Acevedo has been impressive thus far, scoring three goals with a team high three assists. Jackie leads SNU in scoring with nine points.

Beatriz Silva, a 2008 All-American as well, follows with two goals, as does sophomore Bruna Da Cas. The Storm defense has been solid, recording three shutouts so far in 2009. Senior goalie, Erica Brown, has 37 saves with eight goals allowed (1.10 GAA) heading into tonight’s game with the Lady Braves.

Ottawa is off to a 4-3 start and received votes in the latest NAIA national poll released on Tuesday. SNU and Ottawa met for the first time last year, with the game ending in a 1-1 tie.

    Game Day Program

  • SNU holds off Kansas Wesleyan in 1-0 victory

(BETHANY, Okla.)---It was a beautiful September day, a refreshing 69 degrees with 6-10 mile an hour winds out of the north, as the SNU women’s soccer team opened their first home game against the Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes. The Crimson Storm moved to 4-2-1 on the season in a 1-0 win.

    Box Score

The ball moved up and down the field in the first half, though SNU had possession more often than not and managed to keep the play on the offensive side of the field. The two teams battled back and forth for advantage, each sending shots wide and some few on goal, though each of these was blocked. Several strong attacks on the Coyote goal by Jackie Acevedo, Rachel Eguren, Stephanie Royse and Beatriz Silva kept the Kansas Wesleyan defense on their heels, leaving them with little recourse but to clear the ball downfield at any opportunity.

With 16:49 remaining in the first period Silva made a great shot on goal from a well-placed cross from Randi Duncan. However it, like all of the Storm’s efforts throughout the first period, came to nothing as it was saved by the Coyote goalkeeper. Minutes later an acrobatic header by Bruna Da Cas on a corner kick from Duncan met a similar conclusion.

With 7:05 remaining, on one of the Kansas Wesleyan squad’s infrequent runs down the field, a Coyote forward unleashed a long looping shot from the center of the field. Ever-dependable, recently named SAC Defender of the Week (for Sept. 7-13) Erica Brown secured the shot for her second save. 7 minutes and 5 seconds later, the first period ended with the score even at 0-0.

The second period proceeded much like the first, with little of substance occurring until 15:00 into the second half, just after a Kansas Wesleyan defender’s savage undercutting of Acevedo had gone severely under-punished by the referee, Da Cas scored in spectacular fashion, flying in from the center of the field to put in the free kick from Megan Ritter off her thigh. As the ball buried itself in the back right corner of the net, the Crimson Storm went up 1-0 in what was to be the only score of the game.

After the goal from Da Cas, the Storm struggled to dominate the game in the same fashion as they had been. The Coyotes had opportunities as they spent an increasing amount of time on the SNU half of the field. However, SNU's strong defense and dogged play held off the attacking Kansas Wesleyan squad to finish out the game in solid shape.

Bruna Da Cas, as mentioned, had the only goal of the game, and so naturally led the team in scoring, with Megan Ritter holding the single assist. Laura Pearson contributed strong play off the bench sending two balls at the Coyote goal, though neither found their mark.

Erica Brown delivered an excellent performance with 3 saves on the game, and allowed no goals. The Crimson Storm’s next game will be at home, at 5:00 pm Friday, September 25, against Ottawa Kansas.

  • Women's Soccer Falls to #5 Lee University

The Crimson Storm women’s soccer team fell 2-0 to the defending National Champions, Lee University, on Saturday afternoon in Georgetown, Texas. After a three-game win streak, SNU struggled on both ends of the field in the first half, and Lee took advantage, scoring two goals in the first 20 minutes and maintaining their lead for the remainder of the game to walk away with the victory. The loss drops SNU to 3-2-1 on the season.

    Box Score

Lee jumped out to an early lead when Linn Christensen sent a cross just outside the six-yard box to teammate Jamie Achten. Elevating above SNU defenders, Achten headed the ball towards net and Storm goalkeeper, Erica Brown, couldn’t keep a handle on the ball as it fell into the goal. Lee gained the 1-0 lead just over a minute into the game.

Building on the momentum, Lee picked up their second goal about 15 minutes later. This time, Achten picked up the assist, and Christensen came up with the goal, blasting a high shot past Brown to give her team the 2-0 lead.

SNU continued to struggle throughout the first half, but came out battling after the halftime break.

In the second half, the Storm looked to cut into Lee’s lead several times, but never found the back of the net. Jackie Acevedo had an opportunity to put SNU on the board, facing the goalkeeper alone midway through the second half, but the chance was shut down and the Storm continued to trail.

Beatriz Silva and Alanna Mena also gave SNU opportunities to steal the shut out away, firing shots on frame in the second half. Lee’s keeper kept the ball out of the back of the net, and picked up the shut out victory.

In goal for SNU, Brown collected 7 saves, allowing two goals in 90 minutes of work.

SNU will be in action again on Tuesday evening in their first home game of the season. The Storm will host Kansas Wesleyan at 5:00 p.m.

  • Women's Soccer wins third straight with 2-1 win at SWOSU

(WEATHERFORD, Okla.)---The Crimson Storm women’s soccer team improved to 3-1-1 on the year with a 2-1 victory over NCAA Division II opponent, Southwestern Oklahoma State, on Tuesday afternoon in Weatherford. After starting the year 0-1-1, SNU has now won three straight games under first year head coach, Julie Duncan.

    Box Score

On Tuesday, SNU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute of the first half when junior Rachel Eguren scored her third goal of the season off a Jackie Acevedo assist. The assist was Acevedo’s team high third of the year.

SNU held a 1-0 advantage heading into halftime after out-shooting the Lady Bulldogs 8-2 in the first period of play.

In the second half, Southern Nazarene made it 2-0 when Beatriz Silva scored her second goal of the season on a 25-yard unassisted blast past the goalie with 62:30 on the clock.

Southwestern cut the SNU advantage to 2-1 ten minutes later as Korey Hearn knocked in a header off an Elyse Berta corner kick with 71:31 on the clock, but that proved to be as close as Southwestern could get as the Crimson Storm held on for the 2-1 win.

For the game, Southern Nazarene out-shot the Lady Bulldogs 12-6, including three shots on goal while SWOSU managed four shots on goal.

In goal, SNU’s Erica Brown (3-1-1), the reigning Sooner Athletic Conference Defender of the Week, recorded three saves, while Southwestern’s Katie Mahoney picked up one save in the loss.

  • SNU's Erica Brown earns SAC Defender of the Week

(BETHANY, Okla.)---Erica Brown of Southern Nazarene has been named Sooner Athletic Conference Defensive Women’s Soccer Player of the Week for Sept. 7-13.

Brown, a senior goalkeeper from Norman, Okla., logged shutout victories over MidAmerica Nazarene and Baker. She turned away 12 shots on goal for the week.

  • Women's Soccer records second straight shutout in 3-0 win over Baker

(OLATHE, Kan.)---After a disappointing start to the year last weekend in which the Crimson Storm women's soccer team recorded a loss and a tie, SNU responded this weekend with a pair of shutout wins to improve to 2-1-1 on the year.  On Saturday, the Crimson Storm blanked Baker of Kansas, 3-0, behind two goals from junior Rachel Eguren.  SNU's Jackie Acevedo added a goal in the victory.

    Box Score

Baker came out strong, swinging in several crosses in the first ten minutes of the game, and keeping the pressure on the SNU defense. But the Storm gained composer, and their attack kicked in just under 15 minutes into the first half.

Once again, it was Jackie Acevedo who got things going for the Storm, and Beatriz Silva picked up another assist. Silva controlled the ball on the left side of the midfield, and knocked a beautiful cross in the gap between the Baker’s last defender, and their goalkeeper. Acevedo ran on, controlling the ball out of the air, and knocked a shot to the far left corner of the goal to give the Storm a 1-0 lead at the 13:19 mark of the game.

SNU continued to pressure offensively, but Baker did the same. Neither team was able to find the back of the net again in the first half, but the Storm came out battling for a wider lead in the second half.

Alanna Mena gave SNU another opportunity to score when she challenged for a ball just outside Baker’s 18-yard box and was taken down. Rachel Eguren, the Storm’s leading scorer from last season, lined up for the free kick, and blasted a shot past the wall and into the back of the net before Baker’s goalkeeper could make a move. Eguren’s first goal of the season came at the 62:24 mark, and SNU took the 2-0 lead.

Just two minutes later, Eguren struck again. Acevedo weaved through the Wildcat defense to the end line on the right side of the field, and found Eguren open inside the 18-yard box. Eguren touched the ball across her body and fired a shot into the goal with her left to give the Storm a 3-0 lead in the 64th minute of the game.

The Storm kept the pressure on, and controlled Baker’s offense for the remainder of the game, capturing their second win of the season.

“Two wins [over the weekend] is obviously a great morale booster. In the first game, we didn’t always play as a team, but in the second game we played together all the way through and that obviously made a difference,” first year head coach Julie Duncan said. “As a result, we got two goals early in the second half today and sealed the game.”

In the goal for SNU, Erica Brown picked up her second shut out victory. Brown finished the game with five saves.

The Crimson Storm will be in action again on Tuesday afternoon when they travel to Southwestern Oklahoma State University to take on the Bulldogs at 3:00 p.m.

  • Women's Soccer blanks MidAmerica Nazarene for first win

(OLATHE, Kan.)---The Crimson Storm women's soccer team shutout MidAmerica Nazarene on Friday afternoon, 2-0, for their first win of the season.  SNU improves to 1-1-1 on the year with the victory.  Jackie Acevedo scored both goals in the Crimson Storm win.

    Box Score

SNU jumped out to an early lead over the Pioneers when Beatriz Silva found Acevedo open near the top of the 18-yard box. Acevedo dribbled around a MNU defender, and blasted a shot past goalkeeper, Becca Skillman, to put the Storm ahead 1-0 just four minutes into the first half.

Striking again at the 28:08 mark of the game, Acevedo brought down a cross from Stephanie Royse and dribbled deep into the box, driving a shot to the far post. The shot bounced off the post, and found the back of the net, giving SNU a 2-0 lead.

The Storm maintained their lead for the remainder of the first half. The second half, SNU’s defense saw a lot more action, but they held strong, keeping the Pioneers out the of goal until the buzzer sounded. Offensively, SNU remained strong, but couldn’t find the back of the net again, leaving the game at 2-0, and giving them their first win of the 2009 season.

In the goal for SNU, Erica Brown picked up her first shutout of the year, grabbing seven saves. Skillman got the loss for MNU, allowing two goals and picking up four saves.

The Storm will be in action again on tomorrow, as they take on Baker, Kansas at 2:00 p.m.

  • Women's Soccer ties Westmont 2-2 in double OT

(SANTA BARBARA, Calif.)--- The Crimson Storm women's soccer team picked up a tie with Westmont College in their final game of their California trip, tying Westmont 2-2 in double overtime. SNU is now 0-1-1 on the year.

    Box Score

SNU’s first goal came from Bruna Da Cas who flicked a shot past the Westmont goalie into the corner of the net to put SNU up 1-0 at the 16:21 mark of the first half. Da Cas received the ball inside the box after Rachel Eguren knocked a free kick in the box from 25-yards out.

SNU went up 2-0 just shortly after their first goal when Beatriz Silva ripped a ball past a diving Westmont goalie after a pretty give-and-go assist from Jackie Acevedo.  Silva's goal came at the 17:54 mark of the first period.

Westmont would cut into the SNU lead prior to halftime as Aolani Rueff scored off a Jessica Zuehlsdorf assist at the 29:50 mark of the first half to cut the Storm lead to 2-1 heading into halftime.

SNU remained ahead for much of the second, but Westmont knotted the game at 2-2 at the 84:50 mark of the second period when Jameish Washington scored unassisted off a rebound from a blocked free kick from SNU goalie Erica Brown.  Washginton's goal tied the game at 2-2 and sent the contest into overtime.

Neither team could score and the game ended in a 2-2 after two overtimes of play.

For the game, SNU was outshot 23-8 by Westmont.  Ten of Westmont's shots were on goal while SNU had six on goal.  Westmont also had seven corner kicks to SNU's one.

In goal, SNU's Brown had eight saves, giving up two goals, while Westmont's Roxanne Love had four saves and gave up two goals.

  • Women's Soccer loses season opener at Point Loma, 3-0

(SAN DIEGO, CALIF.)---The Crimson Storm women’s soccer team dropped their season opener to Point Loma Nazarene University on Thursday evening in San Diego, losing 3-0. SNU falls to 0-1 on the season and will head to Westmon College in California for a 6:00 p.m. (PST) game on Saturday night.

    Box Score

It was certainly a tough way to start the 2009 season for the Crimson Storm on Thursday night as Point Loma blistered 23 shots at the Southern Nazarene defense while SNU struggled to fire off only eight shots in the game. Eight of the Sea Lions shots were on goal while Southern Nazarene managed only one shot on goal for the game.

Point Loma struck first at the 35:29 mark of the first half when Lauren Abarca finished a goal off of two deflections to put the Sea Lions up 1-0. Brooke Winklepleck recorded the assist.

The Sea Lions made it 2-0 four minutes later when Alex Fuller scored off a corner kick at the 39:54 mark of the first period. Abarca and Kelsey Lundberg recorded the assists. Point Loma took their 2-0 lead into halftime after out-shooting SNU 13-4 in the first half of play.

In the second half, SNU again managed only four shots while Point Loma again reached double figures, launching ten shots at the Storm.

The Sea Lions final goal of the game came late, when Lily Rainey scored unassisted at the 82:04 mark of the second period, nailing a shot from 30-yards out to give Point Loma their final goal of the game. The Sea Lions went on to win 3-0.

Despite being out-shot 23-8, SNU did manage six corners to Point Loma’s four, which was the lone bright spot statistically for SNU.

In goal, SNU’s Erica Brown allowed three goals with five saves in 82:04 minutes of work. Point Loma’s Tiffany Kracy recorded the shutout, allowing no goals in 90 minutes of work with one save.

SNU’s lone shot on goal came from Stephanie Royse. Royse and teammate Beatriz Silva led SNU with two shots apiece.

  • 2009 Women's Soccer Preview

After making it back to the National Tournament after an eleven-year absence in 2007, the Crimson Storm women’s soccer team fell just short of their goal of making back-to-back appearances last season. Finishing 14-2-3 in 2008, the Crimson Storm began preparing for their 2009 campaign immediately following a disappointing loss in the SAC tournament semi-finals.

“The goals for the team this year are to work hard, and prepare to get back to the National Tournament where they all want to be, and where they belong,” first year head coach, and long-time assistant coach Julie Duncan said. “I except the girls to work hard day in and day out, and they have already set the tone that they’re going to do that.”

    Goalkeeper

In goal, SNU will have a wealth of experience returning as First Team All-Conference goaltender, Erica Brown, is back for her senior season. Brown was brilliant in 2008, finishing with a school record 0.50 goals against average with a 13-2-3 record in goal.

“In the goal, we will have returning senior, Erica Brown, who the past three years has done a tremendous job leading the way. She had eleven shutouts for us last year, and the defense was a huge part of us climbing our way to the number ten spot in the national poll. We look for her to lead the way for us once again this year. She is a solid player and a good leader.”

    Defense

The Crimson Storm defense has been a vital part of the team’s success in the past two years, and with three of the four starters from last years group returning, Duncan has confidence in her back line.

Two seniors will fill the outside back positions, as they have for the past two seasons. Megan Ritter, who plays on the right side, has started since her freshman year, and has developed both as a player, and leader. “Ritter is very solid, very athletic, very strong, and competitive in the back” Duncan said of the senior. Although Ritter has not received a lot of attention for her efforts, she has been the backbone of the Storm defense, picking up big stops whenever they were needed the last two years.

Also returning in the back will be senior Alecia Peterson, and her younger sister Amanda Peterson. Alecia, who missed her freshman season after tearing her ACL, has been a standout defender since recovering for her sophomore year. Last season, she was named to the All-Conference team, and she will start for SNU once again on the left side. “She is a solid player, and she is very quick on the outside,” Duncan said. Alecia also has the ability to get up the field into the attack and swing balls into the box.

Amanda will return in the center back position and will hold the defense together with her strength and composer. “She understands the game very well, and does not panic under pressure, finding feet and playing good balls to the midfielders,” Duncan said.

In addition to the three returning starters, SNU will look to familiar faces, and newcomers for immediate help in the back.

Last season, Laura Pearson and Meghan Gebur saw playing time in the defender positions, and they will be looked to once again for help on the outsides.

Whitney Seaton, who will return to the soccer field after taking a year off, will likely fill the other center back position. Her speed and composer will add even more stability to an already solid Storm defense.

SNU will also look to freshman, Kendra Nixon, to get some minutes in the back. “Kendra is more of a utility player, and she will give us depth in the back,” Duncan explained.

    Midfield

The midfield will also but made up of familiar faces, and all three starters from last year’s team will return to the field. But Duncan will not rely only on Alanna Mena, Bruna Da Cas, and Beatriz Silva this season. “We have many players that can play in the midfield, and that’s great because I can create all kinds of options in the middle; from four in there to three in there, and we will be solid in the midfield,” Duncan said of the Storm’s depth.

But, the three returners will bring back the consistency SNU had last year. Mena was named Second Team All-Conference as a junior and will return in the center midfield as a senior this year. She is very strong and skilled with the ball, and is also very capable defensively, dropping back into the box often to give support.

Bruna Da Cas, another Second Team All-Conference selection in 2008, will join Mena in the center midfield once again as a sophomore. Da Cas stepped onto the stage last year, making an immediate impact for the Storm. She also has the ability to get forward in the attack and make things happen around the goal.

Also returning after a breakout freshman season will be Beatriz Silva. With great footwork, accurate passing, and a strong understanding of the game, Silva has become an asset to the Storm’s success after just one season. She was named to the All-Conference team, and received Honorable Mention All-American honors last season, and she is expected to contribute a lot in the midfield again this year.

With several different formations being tossed around, coach Duncan is also looking at the possibility of playing with outside midfielders. Several different players on the roster have the ability to play the outside midfield position, including senior, Randi Duncan, sophomores, Kira Sparks and Laura Pearson, and freshman, Kendra Nixon.

    Forward

Last season, SNU had little trouble putting the ball in the back of the net, but had little depth at the forward position. This season the Storm will have no trouble finding people to put up top to score goals.

With Rachel Eguren, SNU’s leading goal scorer, All-Conference selection, and Second Team All-American last season returning for her junior year, the Storm will be in good shape once again. Eguren has made a habit out of putting the ball in the goal, and after gaining another year of experience, expectations are high for her this season.

In addition to Eguren, the Storm will look to transfer, Jackie Acevedo for goal scoring this year. Acevedo, who played at the University of Tennessee for two years, and was a member of the U-20 and U-23 Mexico National Teams, joins the Storm roster this season. “We’re really looking for Jackie to help create up top. She is a very quick, talented, and smart player,” Duncan said.

Stephanie Royse, who contributed quite a bit to SNU’s goal scoring last year as a junior, will return for her final season in the Storm uniform and be another threat for the Storm up top. Randi Duncan will also play up top, adding even more depth for SNU.

    Wrap-Up

All in all, SNU has a wealth of returning weapons in 2009. The Crimson Storm were picked up fourth in the pre-season SAC poll, but should contend for a shot at the conference title and a trip back to nationals after falling just short in ’08.

“It’s a huge motivation factor because the group of girls we’ve got this year is led by a group of seniors that have worked hard for three years. They have been a huge factor in where the team has come, from not as successful, winning only five games their first year, to making it to the National Tournament their sophomore year, to last year where they fell short of their goals. It was really hard for them, but it’s a lesson learned and I think that will keep them focused throughout the year, and push them to not have that feeling again.”
