After sending three individuals to nationals in 2008, the Crimson Storm cross-country program has high hopes again '09. SNU returns all three national qualifiers: Benson Chepkwony, Erick Ngeny, and Kristen Rosenau (formerly Kristen Spencer).
Men's Preview
The SNU men's program should again be solid in 2009 as the Crimson Storm returns the bulk of their talent from the '08 season.
"My expectation for the guys is to finish in the top two in conference, which is a big possibility," said head coach Billy Miller.
SNU will return Chepkwony, Ngeny, Seth Carley, Collin Whitsett, and Kyle Logan, all of which ran last year. Both Chepkwony and Ngeny were amongst the top runners in the Sooner Athletic Conference last year, and Carley was an All-SAC selection as well as a sophomore.
"Benson and Erick have a good chance to push for All-American this year," said Miller. "Seth should be in our top three runners again."
SNU will also look to newcomer Aaron Goble to have an immediate impact on the lineup.
"I expect Aaron to push Seth this year and we will have four guys fighting for our #5 spot," added Miller. "Kyle Logan will be leading the way in the next four and I expect Anthony Pinazza, Joshua Frees, and Collin Whitsett to make up a very solid core of runners for us this season."
Women's Preview
SNU record holder, Kristen Rosenau, will again lead the women. Rosenau set SNU's mark for fastest time twice last year, finishing the season with a school mark of 18:50 at the Sooner Athletic Conference Championships. At nationals, Rosenau posted a time of 19:13.90.
"Kristen has had a fantastic summer of training," said Miller. "She is already faster than she was last year, so she has a real shot to All-American, which is her goal."
SNU will also return Caitlin Litsey, a 2007 All-SAC selection, along with Chesney Burgweger, Rachel Murphey, Chelsea Vanover, and Michaelah Wieczorek.
Newcomers to the program are Angela Zanotti and Kelsi Vines.
"What we are looking for out of our women's program is good chemistry and I think we have that this year," said Miller. "I would like to see us place in the top three in the Sooner Athletic Conference this year, which is realistic for us this season."
Wrap-up
SNU should be strong on both sides this season. The men are as deep as they have been in school history with the trio of Chepkwony, Ngeny, and Carley leading the way. And with Rosenau pacing the way on the women's side, SNU should be highly competitive in the SAC in 2009.
